I'm willing to accept that it's the best game this year. If someone argues for it, I can't really disagree. I mean, right now Persona 5 isn't objectively better than Horizon, neither is Breath of the Wild, or any other acclaimed game. Apples-to-oranges comparisons...that's how I see it.
Instead I try to imagine what people will say in 5-10 years:
"Hey dude, want to play a game from 2017?"
"Sure, which one?"
"Horizon or Persona?"
"Horizon is dated and clunky dude - Open World Awesome 2022 shits all over it. No fault of Horizon, but it was a product of its time. Persona though - man what a good RPG that was! Still feels awesome to play!"
Even if I thought Horizon were a better game than Persona 5 today (I don't), I'm fairly confident that Persona will hold up better in the long run. Horizon faces more technical restrictions - facial animation, texture detail, world size, draw distance, etc. It is built using materials that we already know won't stand the test of time. Persona 5 however, isn't nearly as limited.
So...my vote for Persona was based on that - I looked for some objective measure by which I could judge the games, and longevity was the strongest factor I could find.
