Looks fine for "mid-range" (fun info - my rig falls into mid-range).

Only thing I would say for consideration is drop the 2TB and get a bigger SSD. If you install games and uninstall them when you are finished you could use a 500GB SSD fairly well. If you have a want to install literally everything you own a license to play on your hard drive however, then stick with the SSD and HDD.

Also, I'm pretty sure that it's weird that I don't use a gaming keyboard or mouse for videogames on my computer...Oh well. #ScurbTierLife

Edit: do you have a copy of Windows and is it on a disc? Asking because you have a blu-ray drive in there that would normally be considered "without use".

Yeah, I have the disc version of Windows 7 that I installed on my iMac a couple years ago.

Then you're all gravy. Happy building. :kinda

I had a 250gb SSD, it drove me nuts. 500gb would save you some headaches imo. Maybe drop the 4TB to 2TB. Unless you really need 4 TB of space. Are you a professional videographer or just a porn addict portilloSeducer ?

How much Overclocking are you intending? Watercoolers are sort of a mixed bag as I found out from my Kraken, its technically quieter on silent than an air cooler, but the pumps make odd noises, instead of a constant hummmmm, so its often more noticeable. Performance wise they tend to be better, but not that much.

Getting a $60-70 Noctua air cooler and investing that $50-60 savings into the SSD or even spending an extra $50, or dropping the disc drive..., on top of that to boost the CPU up to the i7 would make more sense to me. DX12 is practically upon us, 8 threads will likely start making a difference. Expecially if you are doing workloads that would require 4TB of HDD space, unless its for recreational purposes portilloSeducer portilloSeducer portilloSeducer

Otherwise it looks fine.

Regarding the monitor, it depends on what you are looking to get out of it and how much you have left in your budget. Do you care about the panel technology? For example, your iMac has a IPS panel, would you not go back to a TN panel anymore after experiencing IPS? Would you like to take advantage of you GPU and go for a 144hz + screen? Prefer a higher resolution in the 4k or 1440p or save costs and go for a 1080p still? Do you want GSYNC? Do you not want the aesthetics to be too gamey? Lastly, what is your budget for a monitor?

Answer those and I can nail it down for you but here are some of the best monitors which will take advantage of the money you are putting into your rig:

1) ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q (27'' + IPS + 1440p + GSYNC + 165 hz) .

2) Dell Gaming S2716DG (27'' + TN + 1440p + GSYNC + 144 hz)

3) AOC G2460PG (24'' + TN + 1080p + + GSYNC + 144 hz)

4) ASUS ROG SWIFT PG248Q (24'' + TN + 1080p + GSYNC + 184 hz)

These are in my opnion the best monitors out right now that are not 4K as I would rather have more FPS and Hz refresh while so few games (if any) are 4K native/ready at the moment. IPS is the way go to, but no 24'' gaming monitor with GSYNC has an IPS screen at the moment and I put the best 27'' IPS gaming monitor up there. 144 hz is plenty so no "real" need for more. With a 1070 GPU, you will have 60 FPS+ on the majority of games in a 1440p screen, but if you go with a 1080p panel, your FPS will go thru the roof and better utilize the capabilities of these monitors. 1070 will not run most AAA games at 60 FPS in 4k. TN panels has lower response/input lag/etc than IPS but worse picture quality. GSYNC tax sux but well worth it if you made the investment in their higher end cards. 27" 1080p monitors are no good (pixel density is bad), if you decide to go 27" or bigger monitor, it should be 1440p+.

I've never done much OCing nor had I ever tried a water cooling solution before so part of it was innate curiosity. That and those Noctua fans are ugly af. But in the end rationality won out so I've swapped in a D14. Also upped to a 500 GB SSD and downgraded to a 2 TB HDD. And went up to the i7.

Re: TT's Building a Gaming PC Again [UPDATE #2]

Dec 18, '16, 4:44pm

Okay, update #2!

The job I was working on the side that's paying for this thing hasn't finished up yet so I've been going back and tweaking and working on it. The goal after some thinking has been for 1080/144 gaming (not AAA highest settings on day one, but playing some on high settings would be nice as would VR but I play a lot of less taxing games like Civ, KSP, etc.) with a rig and monitor for under $2,000. I've updated the parts list in the OP. Also, I've decided I would like a more aesthetic theme as well, so you'll notice that the parts chosen fit with a B&W theme that I know is overdone but I really dig.

Thanks yet again, everyone!
