At the risk of sounding super pretentious, reading a bit of Andre Bazin opens up this movie in ways I was completely oblivious to the first time around. Saw this early last year, liked it but wasn't crazy about it. Read a bunch of Bazin over the year - especially Ontology of the Photographic Image - and it just blew the doors wide open on the film. This is definitely a mind buster.
And, yeah, Bergman is a master.[/quote]
Nothing pretentious at all about it, it helps us appreciate cinema even more. I am going to sit with my Criterion booklet next time I watch it. I have seen it enough times now that I don't need to read every line. I'll have to do some Bazin reading as well, fresh perspectives are always welcome in my world.
